Q&A with Bryce and Tyler

Bryce Ricklefs and Tyler VanWinkle
We sat down with Tractics' President, Bryce Ricklefs, and CEO, Tyler VanWinkle, to discuss their journey in building a construction management platform for the heavy civil sector. They know firsthand how outdated systems can hold back construction teams and how the right technology can make a real difference. Here’s an inside look at their vision for Tractics and the future of construction tech.
Q: Let’s start with the big picture—what made you decide to build Tractics?

Bryce:
I’ve been in the field for a long time, and I’ve seen a lot of software that claims to be “built for construction.” But the truth is, a lot of it wasn’t built by people who actually understand the industry. Tractics is different because we’ve been in those boots—we know what it’s like to be out there on the job site, juggling documents, chasing approvals, and trying to keep everything on track.

In the heavy civil space, especially with municipal contracts, documentation is everything. If you can’t back up your claims, you don’t get paid. But what good is a software solution if it’s so complicated that the guys in the field won’t use it? Tractics was designed to be intuitive, simple, and effective—so field teams can adopt it without a steep learning curve. If it doesn’t make their lives easier, it won’t be used. And we’ve built it with that in mind.

Tyler:
The construction industry is going through a major shift right now. A lot of companies in heavy civil were founded post-WWII, and we’re now seeing the fourth generation of leadership taking the reins. The old systems just aren’t cutting it for the next generation. That’s where Tractics comes in—we’re building a modern, cloud-based solution that’s designed for how we work today, not some outdated software that’s been patched together over the years.

Q: Tractics is a product of your real-world experience. Can you talk a little bit about how that experience shaped the platform?

Bryce:
From the beginning, we knew that Tractics had to be something that contractors could rely on—whether they’re in the field or in the office. We’ve been through the pain points of managing complex projects, and we knew that technology had to solve those issues, not add more frustration. One of the key things we focused on was making sure Tractics integrated smoothly with other platforms, like Sage Intacct Construction. With this integration, you get a complete, modern cloud solution that simplifies everything from project tracking to accounting.

The idea is to give contractors the tools they need to run their businesses more efficiently without overcomplicating things. If it’s not easy to use in the field, it doesn’t matter how advanced the software is—it just won’t get adopted. So, we made sure Tractics is intuitive and tailored to the specific needs of heavy civil contractors.

Tyler:
Tractics was created by contractors for contractors. Our team has been on both sides of the equation—managing the work in the field and handling the administrative side. The platform draws on years of that field experience to empower heavy civil contractors with real tools to get their jobs done more efficiently. Our partnership with Sage Intacct is key because it enhances what we’re able to offer—an even more robust cloud solution that covers everything from job costing to accounting, helping businesses streamline operations across the board.

Q: It sounds like you’re really focused on simplifying processes for construction teams. Can you tell us more about how Tractics helps make that happen?

Bryce:
In construction, time is money. Any system that isn’t streamlined, any process that creates unnecessary steps, is a problem. Tractics solves that by providing a single platform where you can track everything—schedules, budgets, materials, and labor—while staying connected with the office and field teams in real-time. We wanted to eliminate the back-and-forth between departments, so we’ve made it simple for everyone to access what they need when they need it.

We’ve also built our platform to be adaptable. Every job is different, so contractors need flexibility. With Tractics, you can customize workflows and project templates based on your needs, giving you control over how you manage your work.

Tyler:
One of the best parts is how Tractics simplifies accounting, which is a huge pain point in the industry. The integration with Sage Intacct Construction bridges the gap between construction project management and finance. Now, when field teams enter updates, they’re automatically synced with the back office, making it much easier for accounting teams to track costs, handle billing, and ensure everything is aligned. That means fewer errors and fewer headaches for everyone involved.

Q: Looking ahead, what do you see for the future of construction technology?

Tyler:
The future is all about modern cloud solutions like Tractics and Sage Intacct. We’re seeing a big shift in the industry—companies are moving away from legacy systems and adopting technology that’s flexible, scalable, and intuitive. The industry is ready for this change. The older systems just don’t work for today’s needs, and the next generation of leadership is demanding better tools. We’re excited to be at the forefront of that transformation.

Bryce:
There’s no doubt that the next few years will bring massive change to construction tech. We’re already seeing trends toward more connected systems, AI-driven insights, and more automation. But at the heart of it all, it’s about simplicity. Contractors don’t need to be bogged down by complex software—they need tools that make their lives easier and help them deliver projects faster, safer, and more efficiently. That’s exactly what we’re focused on with Tractics.

Q: Any final thoughts on what sets Tractics apart from other construction software out there?

Bryce:
Tractics is different because it’s not just software for construction—it’s built by people who actually work in construction. We’ve lived the challenges, worked the long hours, and seen firsthand what tools work and what doesn’t. This isn’t just a tech solution—it’s a solution created by contractors who get it.

Tyler:
Exactly. We’re building for the future of construction. Tractics isn’t just a platform—it’s a movement towards more efficient, intuitive, and connected construction management. It’s a tool that simplifies the complex and helps contractors of all sizes succeed. And we’re just getting started.
